Cupcakes offer a tasty alternative to traditional cakes for almost any celebration. Birthdays, showers, even weddings feature cupcakes. Flowers are a popular choice for topping cakes and cupcakes. Whether you want an elegant flower cupcake topper or a funky flower topper, there are many ways to decorate your flower cupcakes. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Fondant
Fondant offers more options than traditional icing. It is a sugar-based product that resembles Play-Doh in texture. You can roll out the fondant or mold it into various shapes. For a simple flower cupcake topper, roll the fondant into a sheet. Use a flower-shaped cookie cutter to make the flower toppers. Regular cookie cutters work with fondant, or you can purchase special fondant cutters. Choose a cookie cutter that is small enough so the flowers will fit neatly on top of the cupcake.
Edible Flowers
Using real flowers on top of the cupcakes adds an elegant touch to the design. The flower selection is essential when placing real flowers on top of a cupcake or cake. Make sure you choose an edible bloom. Examples of edible flowers are daisies, lavender, roses, violets and fruit tree blossoms such as apple, peach and orange blossoms. Some flowers are toxic, so only use edible varieties as cupcake toppers. Flowers can cause allergic reactions, so consider this option carefully. Choose flowers that haven't been sprayed with pesticides. Wash the flowers to remove any dirt. Inspect them for bugs before using them on the cupcakes. Removing the pistils and stamens gets rid of the pollen on the flowers, which can bother some people.
Silk Flowers
Because there are some safety concerns about using real flowers, silk flowers offer a fine alternative for cupcake toppers. Craft stores sell a variety of silk flowers that resemble almost any real flower. Many of them look realistic so your cupcakes will still look elegant. You also don't have to worry about silk flowers wilting like real flowers.
