Cool the cupcakes completely. Starting with room temperature or cooler cupcakes will help the frosting adhere and spread.
Whip the frosting with a small whisk or fork until it is light and fluffy. Drop a scoop of frosting in the center of the cupcake.
Hold the cupcake in one hand and a butter knife in the other. Place the tip of the knife in the frosting and spin the cupcake to spread the frosting toward the edges. Continue spreading the frosting until it is smooth.
Turn the cupcake upside down, holding it by the base. Place the frosted top of the cupcake gently into a plate filled with sprinkles. Turn the cupcake in a circle if needed to ensure even coverage of sprinkles.
