Cupcake Design Ideas for Icing

Cupcake decorating spans from simple to extravagant, but at the heart of all cupcake designs is the icing. Icing creates a base for more decorations and sets the tone of your cupcakes' theme. Using some simple icing designs and tools, your little pastries will be a treat to the eye as well as the palate. Add this to my Recipe Box.

The Cupcake Canvas

Flat-topped cupcakes are easiest to work with if you're creating a specific design. If the cupcakes don't come out of the oven flat, slice the tops to give yourself a level surface.

Icing Types

Choose a type of icing, either canned or homemade. A buttercream tends to taste better than royal icing, which dries harder, providing a better base for trims and accessories.

Icing Color

To color your icing, add a bit of paste or liquid food coloring and mix with a toothpick. Be careful not to add too much at first. Experiment with little drops at a time to achieve your desired colors.

Drawing Lines

To create lines on your cupcakes, you can purchase colored tubes with different attachments to create various shapes, or for simple lines, cut a corner off a plastic sandwich bag and apply your icing from that. To make a double-toned frosting design with precision, add a strip of a different color of icing or food coloring inside the bag.

Piping Icing

A piping tube is a way to add texture to your cupcake design. An easy piping design is squiggly lines. You also can create S-shaped scrolls placed closely together to form heart shapes. Squirt multi-colored dots on top of your cupcakes. For spirals, pipe a spiral of icing starting at the outer edge and work inward. Repeat with a smaller spiral on top.

Writing on Your Cupcake

To write on your cupcake with a tube of icing, write by moving your arm rather than just your hand for a neater result.
