How to Decorate an Elmo Cupcake

If your child is one of the millions of kids who consider Elmo from "Sesame Street" a close friend, why not put a smile on her face by serving her an adorable Elmo cupcake? Elmo cupcakes are an easy treat for birthdays, school parties or weekday desserts, and even novice decorators can create professional-looking cupcakes. Using simple techniques and just a few basic decorating tools that you can find at your local craft store, Elmo cupcakes are the perfect way to treat the little one in your life. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Tint the chocolate frosting with a few drops of black icing coloring and blend well; continue adding more coloring until you achieve a black or very dark gray tint. Be aware that the frosting may continue to darken for about an hour after you add the food coloring.

Place the black frosting inside a pastry bag with the small round tip assembled. Draw Elmo's smiling mouth on each cupcake by outlining a semicircle and filling it in completely.

Tint the white buttercream frosting with enough no-taste red coloring to achieve the bright red color of Elmo's fur.

Place red frosting in a pastry bag with the grass tip assembled and cover each cupcake with red frosting "fur," working carefully around the mouth. Use short strokes with the pastry bag, placing the tip of the bag to the cupcake and slowly pulling upward as you squeeze out the frosting. Repeat until each cupcake is covered.

Place two white Necco wafers next to each other on each cupcake to create Elmo's eyes; dot each eyeball with a bit of black chocolate frosting from the pastry bag.

Place one orange gumdrop in the center of each cupcake to create Elmo's nose.

Tips

- In place of the Necco wafers and orange gumdrops, you can simply draw Elmo's eyes and nose onto the cupcake using plain white frosting and bright orange frosting in pastry bags.
