How to Mail Cupcakes in One Piece

Whether you mail cupcakes overseas or across town, you want them to arrive in one piece. Safe delivery starts with the bakeware and continues with the packaging and label. Delivery times also are important. If you are shipping long distances, you want to expedite the delivery to avoid the cupcakes getting stale or moldy. It may cost a little more to ship next day air or two day delivery but the recipient will appreciate the extra effort. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Bake cupcakes in disposable muffin tins, available at any grocery store. The tins keep the cupcake from crumbling during shipping. Choose either individual tins or a disposable muffin pan.

Frost the cupcakes once they are cool or spoon the frosting into a plastic baggie and ship with the cupcakes, so the recipient can ice the confections upon arrival. If you frost the cupcakes, dust a piece of wax paper with powdered sugar and place on top the cupcakes so the frosting isn't damaged during shipping.

Place the cupcakes snugly into a sturdy container, such as a plastic storage container or cardboard box. Cover the cupcakes with plastic wrap. Place another piece of cardboard over the storage box and tape into place.

Pour a layer of packing peanuts in the bottom of a shipping box. Place the cupcake box on the packing peanuts. Crumple newspaper and stuff around the cupcake box to keep it in the middle of the shipping box. Fill the shipping box with more packing peanuts.

Seal the shipping box. Apply the shipping label to the top of the box. Mark the box "Fragile". Also mark the top of the box with the wording "This Side Up".

Ship the cupcakes either overnight express or two-day delivery. The quick shipment keeps the cupcakes fresh and results in less handling. Less handling of the shipping box means less damage to the cupcakes.

Tips

- If you baked the cupcakes in individual tins, you can further protect the cupcakes by sealing each in their own plastic bag before placing in the storage box.
