Make your favorite cake recipe from a box or from scratch. If you want the simplest cake possible, purchase your favorite cake mix from the store and follow the instructions. Chocolate, lemon and vanilla cake are all excellent choices for the Fourth of July. Use a cake pan that is the right size for the cake mix that you purchased, and make sure that you grease the pan before putting the batter into it.

Bake cupcakes instead of one larger cake if you desire something different. Place cupcake liners in a cupcake pan and pour the cake batter in, leaving some room at the top for rising. Bake according to instructions on the package for cupcakes, or until you can insert a toothpick in the center of a cupcake and it comes out clean.

Allow the cake or the cupcakes to cool for approximately 20 to 30 minutes before frosting. You can use either homemade or canned frosting. Vanilla, buttercream and cream cheese frosting are all delicious varieties for the Fourth of July. You will need 2 cups of frosting.

Wash your strawberries and blueberries. Cut the strawberries in half and place them in a bowl. Sprinkle a few teaspoons of sugar over the strawberries and allow them to sit while you frost the cake.

Frost the cake or cupcakes using a frosting knife or spatula. Apply the frosting evenly over the top and sides of the cake. If you are frosting cupcakes, frost only the tops of the cupcakes.

Stir the strawberries and place them on top of the cake or cupcakes. If you have a large cake, place them in rows to resemble the red stripes on the American flag. Place the blueberries in the upper-left corner of the cake. Otherwise, decorate the top of the cake however you wish with the fruit. Allow the white frosting to show through in a few places.
