How to Make a Simple Frog Cupcake

Cupcakes are a fun treat for many occasions. Make these colorful cakes for a child's birthday, class party, to emphasize a lesson on amphibians or as a rainy day activity. This method employs the use of store-bought cake mix and frosting, making this a perfect choice for when you don't have a lot of time. The simplicity of this recipe allows even young children to help by frosting and placing the frog's eyes. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Purchase a quality cake mix and a container of your favorite store-bought white frosting.

Gather needed supplies while your oven preheats to the temperature specified on the box of cake mix and line the muffin pans with cupcake papers.

Bake cupcakes according to directions on the box of mix. Allow cupcakes to cool completely before attempting to frost them.

Prepare frosting by combining 12 drops of green food coloring into the frosting to achieve the desired shade of green. Adjust amount of food coloring to your preference. If you are careful, you can stir this right in the container with a knife, otherwise transfer the frosting to a bowl before adding food color.

Frost the top of each cupcake with a layer of green frosting. While the frosting is still wet place two marshmallows for eyes at the top of each cupcake. Gently press into the frosting so they stick where you put them.

Allow frosting to dry; then use a black gel frosting tube, designed for writing on cakes, to make a smiley mouth, two dots for a nose and place a dot in the center of each marshmallow for the eyes. Allow the gel to dry and the cupcakes are complete.

Tips

- These cupcakes can be a fun class activity if you bake the cupcakes in advance and allow the children to decorate their own.

- If your frosting is too stiff and causing your cupcakes to crumble, microwave frosting for approximately 10 seconds to soften it, making it easier to spread.

Warning

- Cake mix contains some common allergens. If you are serving these cupcakes to a group you are unfamiliar with, such as a class, let the administrator know of possible allergens by removing the nutritional information from the box and providing it for the administrator to reference if necessary.
