Puppy Cupcake Ideas

Create puppy cupcakes for a birthday party or as a special treat on an otherwise normal day. While adults will have to handle the baking, children can assist with the decorating as long as you don't mind a mess. Use different colors and flavors of icing to represent your favorite dog breed in a tasty, edible form. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Puppy Face Cupcakes

Wilton recommends using assorted candies and piping techniques to create cupcakes with puppy dog faces. Start by icing your cupcake with icing tinted to the desired fur color. Pipe ears onto the puppy cupcake with an open decorating tip. Begin each ear near the top of the cupcake and extend it along the side of the cupcake to leave plenty of room for the puppy's facial features. If you prefer pointed puppy ears, cut a marshmallow in half diagonally to create two triangular ears. Dip each cut portion of the marshmallow into pink decorating sugar to add detail, if desired. You can pipe on eyes and a mouth with additional icing or use round candies for the eyes. A marshmallow cut in half and pressed onto the center of the cupcake creates a muzzle and you can add a heart-shaped candy for the puppy's nose. If you wish to add a tongue to create panting puppies, cut it from a piece of soft, red taffy or a piece of fruit leather.

3-D Puppy Cupcakes

If you have a little extra time to prepare your puppy cupcakes and you want to impress the lucky recipients, try crafting three-dimensional puppy cupcakes that look like they're ready to go for a walk. Start with one standard-size cupcake to represent the puppy's body and a miniature cupcake to use as the puppy's head. Ice the tops of the standard cupcake and mini cupcake with icing of your desired fur color. Add candies and additional icing to the mini cupcake as you would to create a puppy face cupcake. Once the face is complete, assemble the 3-D puppy cupcakes by placing the mini cupcake on it's side on top of the standard cupcake. This gives the puppy cupcake the appearance of looking forward rather than straight up, which is more realistic. You can serve the cupcakes as is, or press a piece of shoelace licorice or a candy straw into the standard cupcake just behind the mini cupcake to serve as a leash.

Dachshund Cupcakes

Create the long body of a dachshund puppy by grouping together four cupcakes. You can vary the size of these miniature cakes by choosing standard size or miniature cupcakes. Cut pear shapes from your favorite rolled cookie recipe and bake them to create the dachshund's face and ears. Make extra pear-shaped cookies, as some may break; you can also cut one of the cookies in half to form two pointed tails. Cool the cookies and decorate with assorted frosting and candies, and then press them onto the cupcakes immediately after icing. The cookies will stick to the fresh frosting and become securely attached when the frosting dries and forms a light crust. Place chocolate-covered raisins or nuts at the bottom front and back of each dachshund puppy to represent feet for the finishing touch.
