How to Make Tummy Cupcakes

When it comes to planning a fabulous event, attention to detail is what really makes your party stand out. If you are planning a baby shower, you might be thinking about how to impress your guests with a baby-themed dessert. Serving a large cake shaped like a pregnant belly has become a popular choice. You can decorate a batch of cupcakes to look like tiny tummies so each guests gets their own tasty treat celebrating the bun in the oven. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Scoop buttercream icing onto the center of each cupcake. Use about ¼ of a cup of icing per cupcake. Rather than spreading it around, leave the frosting in a lump or hill shape directly in the center. This will be the pregnant tummy. If the icing spreads or settles, it is too thin. It can be thickened by adding powdered sugar to it.

Sprinkle cornstarch on the surface where you will be working. Roll out fondant of any color until it is even and about 1/8 of an inch thick. Cut rectangles 2- by 3-inches long out of the fondant with a craft knife. Make as many rectangles as you have cupcakes, plus a few extras to compensate for mistakes. Cut off the corners to create oblong ovals instead of rectangles.

Cover each cupcake with an oval of fondant. Line up one the fondant with the edge of the cupcake on one side; let the longer end hang down over the other side. This will be the dress. Do not press down on the buttercream icing while covering the cupcakes; simply place the fondant over the top. Give the long end a bit of shape by bunching or pressing it together horizontally to lend a wavy look, like fabric on the bottom of a dress.

Reapply cornstarch to your working area. Roll out the skin-tone fondant. Use a craft knife to cut out "arms." Make these about ½ an inch by 1 1/2 inches and slightly plump. Don't worry about detail; three fingers and a thumb will look fine. If you are not confident in your fondant cutting, make a template for the arm out of paper to cut around that. Make two arms for each cupcake.

Place an arm gently on each side of every cupcake so the little arms look like they are resting on the tummy.

Tips

- Wait until the cupcakes are completely cooled before decorating.

- You can make your own buttercream icing and fondant from scratch or buy them prepared from a craft store or specialty cooking shop.

- A bright color fondant will look more like a dress and will have better contrast with the skin-tone fondant. You can also make small tick marks with a toothpick or fondant tool along the bottom edge of the "dress" to make it look more realistic.
